Movistar+ has a short history. It was launched officially on the 8 of July of 2015. Its origin comes from the union of the platforms Canal+ and Movistar TV.

Canal+ was a satellite TV platform for subscription that operated in Spain through Astra and Hispasat satellites. It was a property of the company Prisa. This company was in debt, therefore it had to sell their shares of Canal+. This situation was resourceful from Telefónica that made an offer of 725 million euros to get the 56% of the Canal+ shares. After Telefónica made an offer to Mediaset of 295 million euros to obtain its shares. Telefónica got the absolute control of Canal+.

Telefónica joined together Canal+ and its TV platform for payment, MovistarTV that emitted with IPTV. Therefore Telefónica got the most powerful TV platform in Spain. The union was in a progressive way until September 2016. Telefónica decided to update all the platform with a new visual image that supposed the final of the union.
